Dental implants are a more effective alternative to dentures. At Bella Medical Centre, we have a team of experienced dental experts who offer specialized treatment for dental implants in Abu Dhabi. However, before you get dental implants from an experienced dental clinic in Abu Dhabi, it would be helpful if you know about the different types of implants. Here, we would be taking a look at the different types of implants that are available so that you can have an informed discussion with your dentist before getting one.

What Are Dental Implants?

Before we delve into the details of different types of dental implants, let us first understand the basics of dental implants. Dental implants are metal, screw-like posts that replace damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real teeth. Implants are made from pure titanium. They are small in size and fit into the bone under the gum to mimic natural tooth roots.

One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is that they can be used in different cases of tooth loss and they be personalized to fit you.

The Different Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants can be of three different types:

  • Endosteal Implants
  • Subperiosteal implants
  • Zygomatic dental implants

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are commonly recommended to most patients. However, to get it, you need a good, healthy jawbone that they can fuse to.

They are placeholder posts that are shaped like screws. They are put into the place where the false teeth are fitted into. After the process is completed, you would need to give it some time to fuse with the jawbone and create a stronghold. Once it is properly fused, the false, ceramic tooth is placed onto the post.

Subperiosteal Implants

This particular type of implant is recommended for people who don’t want any kind of metal to be fused into their jawbone or for people who don’t have a strong enough jawbone.

Instead of being fixed into the jawbone, the subperiosteal implants rest on top of the jawbone and underneath the gum.

Usually, a metal frame is placed under the gum with a post attached to it. Once inserted, the gum heals around the frame to hold it in place. After that, the false teeth are fitted onto the poles that are attached to the frame.

This doesn’t require intensive oral surgery and is also good for people who don’t have enough jawbone.

In most cases, you would be recommended for either of these two types of implants. However, in rarer cases, you might be recommended the third type.

Zygomatic Implants

As said before, zygomatic implants and only recommended if you have an insufficient amount of jawbone. The fundamental difference between this and other types of implants is that instead of being fixed to the jawbone, they are fixed to the cheekbone.

The process of getting zygomatic implants is complicated and hence they are rarely recommended. You need to have a detailed discussion with your dentist at our dental clinic in Abu Dhabi so as to carefully consider all the options before you go for it.
